Governor McGreevey has established the Animal Welfare Task Force to: examine the current laws concerning animal abuse and neglect, animal population control, and animal welfare; examine the manner in which the anti-cruelty laws are enforced; examine the status of population control and the animal shelter system; and recommend changes to the laws and regulations of New Jersey to protect animals from inhumane treatment, improve the enforcement of anti-cruelty laws, and address the issue of unwanted, abandoned and euthanized animals.

As a volunteer or an employee of an animal advocacy organization, your input is vital. You're aware of the plight of animals on a continuing basis; you've encountered obstacles to helping animals in need; you have ideas of how animals' lives can be improved. Please speak out and share your information with the Animal Welfare Task Force. Send all correspondence along with your contact information to Judith Lieberman, Esquire, Chair, Animal Welfare Task Force, PO Box 001, Trenton, NJ 08625-0001.

Warning:  If you're thinking of using cocoa bean mulch to fertilize your lawn, please think twice. Made from spent cocoa beans used in the production of chocolate, cocoa bean mulch may deter slugs and snails, but it also attracts companion canines, who can be poisoned by eating it.

Cocoa beans contain caffeine and theobromine, both chemicals that are toxic to dogs. Depending on the amount ingested, symptoms range from vomiting and diarrhea (that's if about two ounces were eaten by a 50-pound dog) to tremors, seizures and death, if a canine of the same size were to eat nine ounces of cocoa mulch. If you suspect that your dog has eaten this organic fertilizer, immediately contact your veterinarian or the APCC Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for 24-hour emergency assistance. For more information on cocoa bean mulch and other substances toxic to pets, please visit APCC online.

The HSUS is working to address this problem and is gathering contact information and stories from those who have experienced this dilemma. If you or someone you know has been denied homeowner's insurance or has been unable to obtain it based on the breed of dog in the household, please contact The HSUS at companionanimals@hsus.org for a contact form.  World Week For Animals In Laboratories is 4/19-4/27. Every year, millions of animals are used as tools of research - dogs, cats, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chimpanzees, pigs, birds, horses, and more. They are burned, poisoned, starved,  electrocuted, force-fed, deprived of company or overcrowded, dissected, transplanted, and killed to find new and improved household cleaners, cosmetics, weed killers and drain cleaners. Some are used in "medical experiments" although the difference between human and animal reactions make the results meaningless. For info about World Week for Animals in Laboratories, visit http://www.wwail.org/.

National Homeless Animals' Day 2003 will be observed on Saturday, August 16 - this  internationally recognized day is marked by dedicated animal rights/welfare/rescue groups and individuals holding Candlelight Vigils and other events to bring public attention to the magnitude of the pet overpopulation tragedy and how it affects your local community. The aim is to educate the public on the importance of spaying and neutering their pets and to adopt their next pet(s) from shelters/homeless animals rather than buying from pet shops or breeders. Shelters and rescue groups are urged to plan their own events. Visit http://isaronline.org and following the links to Campaigns, then National Homeless Animals' Day. ISAR will mail all interested organizations a free Candlelight Vigil planning kit that will help you organize and hold a successful event. For info, email Amy@isaronline.org.

Pet-Abuse.Com is a nonprofit organization that provides free online resources to empower animal welfare organizations and rescues to make informed decisions about adoption applicants by performing criminal background searches on potential volunteer and adoption candidates. Abusers have attempted to adopt from shelters in their own areas using slightly altered spellings of their name to avoid being identified as a convicted animal abuser.
"Our organization tracks, documents and reports criminal animal abuse and abusers. We provide this information in a searchable online database. We currently have over 1000 criminal cases documented in our database within the United States alone, and over 900 abusers. There is absolutely no charge for shelters and rescue groups to use this resource - and there never will be.
Our database covers all criminal animal abuse, including wildlife, farmed animals and companion animals.
Our website allows you to: * Perform phonetic searches on potential adoption applicant's names to check for a criminal history of animal abuse; * Access real-time statistical graphs that display important information about patterns regarding age, gender, and the clearly established connection between animal abuse and violence towards humans; * Follow the progress of specific cases through our CaseWatch feature. When we post an update (such as a conviction, sentencing, trial date, etc.) to a case that you have selected to be notified about, you will be emailed letting you know that we have added an update to the case. * Enhance your own website with our Dot Org Workshop website tools, including a Euthanasia Counter, a live animal abuse case news feed that displays the most recent animal abuse cases in your region on your website, a Responsible Pet Owners Test and more; * Speak to us directly online using our one-on-one Live Support chat. We are available almost 24/7 to answer your questions or help you find the information you are seeking. We are funded solely by donations from the public and from our own pockets. We will never charge any fee for animal welfare organizations to have access to the information we provide.
Getting started is easy - there is no software to install, and no special access codes to use - simply log on to our website at www.pet-abuse.com. The animal abuse database can be accessed by clicking on the "Abuse Database" option in the navigation bar. The only things we ask in return for the information we provide are: * Spread the word! Share this resource with your other local animal welfare organizations. The more this database is used, the more effective it will be at  preventing abusers from having easy access to adopting or "rescuing" animals. The backbone of this project is forged from animal welfare organizations and concerned citizens working together to put an end to animal abuse. * Share your local case information with us! If you work directly (or indirectly for that matter) with a humane law enforcement organization or animal control department, encourage them to contact us and share their cases so that everyone can share this information. If you hear of new criminal animal abuse cases (or updates to cases already listed in the database) in your area, let us know. The more case information we have, the better this resource will be. You can find out more about the information we require in order to submit a case to the animal abuse at http://www.pet-abuse.com/database/caseinfo.php
We hope that you will take advantage of the free services and resources we offer. Please feel free to call (858-792-7813) or email us with any questions. (Note: Because of the volatile nature of our website content, we do not provide our phone number on the website.) If you choose not to use our resources, but feel that our cause is worthwhile, we hope that you encourage people to consider donating to our organization so that we may continue to provide resources to the animal welfare and rescue community.
